Day 12: A Servant’s Heart

Devotional: Applying the Bible to my today.

“Lent” is the period of time that we “wait for Easter,” while meditating for forty days on Jesus’ love, His representation of God’s Love, and looking at the cross of Jesus who suffered, was crucified and died to redeem us from our sin. And “the resurrection faith” is the faith to believe in Jesus, who has defeated the power of death and has resurrected, and to recognize that Jesus is my Lord. Based on resurrection faith, the church (Ecclesia) is built. The church is a group of serving people (Diakonia Congregation).

Today’s verses teach us about serving. James and John, the sons of Zebedee, asked Jesus that He let one of them sit at His right and the other at His left in His glory. Then Jesus said to them, “'Can you take the suffering cup I drink?... To sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.' When the ten [disciples] heard about this, they became indignant with James and John." (Mark 10:41).

They got upset and had arguments with one another. Jesus called them together and said, “…whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:43-45)

Jesus clearly stated His purpose in coming to earth; He came with “the shape of the servant.” The Bible says, “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross!” (Philippians 2:6-8) Yes, Christ Jesus came down to the lowest position, at the bottom. Jesus, their teacher, even washed the feet of His disciples.

At that time, when a man washed the feet of someone, it meant that he was “his servant.” In washing their feet, Jesus showed “the life to be lowered” and “the life to serve” as the example to his disciples. He provided this example not only to them but also to all the Christians of today. I pray we all want to learn and follow the “humbleness” (lowliness) and the serving life He showed us. May we clearly remember that our Jesus said that He has come to the earth not to be served, but to serve.

We must engrave the words on our memory and lead the life of a servant. “…Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.” (Mark 10:43-44)

Dear fellow Christians, let’s follow the serving life of Jesus and go to the place of humbleness to think of others as better than ourselves. Let’s put down our self-righteousness and selfish thoughts and behaviors and go to “the serving place of Jesus.” When we try to lead the life of humbleness and serving, Jesus will surely raise us up to participate in “the glory of the resurrection.”

Reflect:

• Do I meditate on the Word to engrave Jesus’s serving (Diakonia) on my mind?
• What kind of self-righteousness and selfish thoughts and motives are in my mind?
• How can I practice “the serving of Jesus” today?

 

Prayer:

Please help us live lives of humbleness and serving, meditating deeply on God’s love, the suffering and death of Jesus on the cross, and the resurrection, bringing us to the faith of the resurrection. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

‘사순절(Lent)’은 ‘부활절(Easter)’을 기다리면서 ‘하나님의 사랑을 나타내시는 예수님의 행적 40일’을 묵상하고, 인간의 죄를 대속해 주시기 위해 고난당하시고 십자가에 달려 죽으신 ‘예수님의 십자가’를 바라보는 절기입니다. 그리고 ‘사망권세를 이기시고 부활 하신 예수님’을 나의 주로 믿는 ‘믿음’이 ‘부활신앙’입니다.

이 ‘부활신앙’이 기초가 되어 ‘교회(Ecclesia)’가 세워진 것입니다. 이 ‘교회’는 ‘섬 김 공동체(Diakonia Congregation)’입니다.

오늘 본문은 우리에게 ‘섬김’에 대한 교훈을 주고 있습니다. 세베대의 아들 야고보와 요한은 주님의 나라에서 한 명은 주의 우편에 그리고 다른 한 명은 주님의 좌편에 앉게 해 달라고 요청하였습니다. 그러자 예수님은 “너희가 나의 마시는 고난의 잔을 마실 수 있겠느 냐?”고 되물으시면서 그러나 “그 자리가 누구를 위해 예비되어 있는지는 하늘 아버지만이 아신다.”고 말씀하셨습니다. 그런데 이 대화를 듣고 있던 다른 제자들이 그만 화를 내고 맙니다.

[막10:41] “열 제자가 듣고 야고보와 요한에 대하여 화를 내거늘” 이라고 기록하고 있습 니다. 그들은 매우 얹잖아 했고, 이 일로 서로 다투었습니다. 이러한 분위기를 아신 예수 님께서는 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.

[막10:43-45] “너희 중에는 그렇지 않을지니 너희 중에 누구든지 크고자 하는 자는 모 든 사람의 종이 되어야 하리라. 인자의 온 것은 섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기려 하고 자기 목숨을 많은 사람의 대속물로 주려 함이니라”고 예수님 자신이 이 땅에 오신 목 적을 분명히 하셨습니다.

우리가 기억하기로는 우리 예수님은 ‘섬김의 종의 형체’를 가지고 이 땅에 오셨습니다. [빌2:6-8]에 “그는 근본 하나님의 본체시나 하나님과 동등됨을 취할 것으로 여기지 아니 하시고, 오히려 자기를 비어 종의 형체를 가지사 사람들과 같이 되셨고, 사람의 모양으로 나타나사 자기를 낮추시고 죽기까지 복종하셨으니 곧 십자가에 죽으심이라”고 증거하고 있습 니다.

그렇습니다. 그리스도이신 예수님은 더 이상 낮아질 수 없는 곳까지 낮아지셨습니다. 스승이신 예수님께서 친히 제자들의 발(Foot)을 씻겨 주셨다는 사실입니다. 당시 타인의

발을 씻겨 준다는 것은 자신이 ‘그의 종(Servant)’임을 나타내는 일이었습니다. 제자들 의 발을 몸소 씻어 주신 예수님은‘낮아짐의 삶’‘섬김의 삶’을 직접 제자들에게 본을 보 여 주신 것입니다. 아니 오늘날 우리 성도들에게도 본을 보여 주신 것입니다.

그렇습니다. 우리는 예수님의 이 ‘겸손’(‘낮아짐’)과 ‘섬김의 삶’(‘이웃을 위한 삶’)을 배우고 본받기를 원합니다.

여러분, 우리 예수님이 이 땅에 오신 목적(目的)은, 섬김을 받으려 함이 아니었고, 도리어 섬기려 함에 있었다는 것을 우리는 분명히 기억합니다. 그리고 우리에게 주시는 말 씀, 오늘 본문 [막10:43-44] “너희 중에는 그렇지 않을지니 너희 중에 누구든지 크고자 하는 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되고, 너희 중에 누구든지 으뜸이 되고자 하는 자는 모든 사람의 종이 되어야 하리라”는 말씀을 우리는 마음에 깊이 새겨서 ‘섬김의 삶’을 살아가야 합니다.

사랑하는 교우 여러분, ‘예수 그리스도의 섬김의 삶’을 본받아서, 내가 먼저 남을 나 보다 낫게 여기는 ‘겸손의 자리’로 나아갑시다. 독선과 이기적인 생각과 행위를 모두 내려 놓고, 예수 그리스도의 ‘섬김의 자리’로 나아갑시다. 이렇게 ‘겸손’과 ‘섬김’의 삶을 살 고자 힘쓸 때, 예수님은 반드시 우리를 높이시며 ‘부활의 영광’에 참예하게 해 주실 것입 니다.

 

적용 :

1. 예수님의 섬김(Diakonia)의 행적을 기록한 성경말씀을 항상 묵상하고 있습니까? 2. 나에게 있는 ‘독선’과 ‘이기심’은 무엇입니까?
2. 오늘 ‘예수님의 섬김’을 어떻게 실천하겠습니까?

 

기도 :

하나님의 사랑과 예수 그리스도의 십자가 고난과 죽음 그리고 부활을 깊이 묵상하여 ‘부활 신앙’을 회복하여 ‘겸손과 섬김의 삶’을 살게 하옵소서. 아멘
