Don’t forget!

What types of things do you and your spouse do to remember what is worth celebrating in your marriage?

Every year on our anniversary, Ron and I sit with a blank tablet, take a deep breath, then jot down every thing we remember starting from our previous anniversary to this anniversary. The list includes any trips, visitors, illnesses, successes, failures, faith journeys, the incredible, and the not-so-incredible. Whew!

Most years we look forward to this little project, but the year we had to list the death of our son, the death of my mom, significant health issues, and major job change… we put off our anniversary project for almost 3 months just to avoid recalling it all. We now have 15 years of recording the good, the bad and the ugly of our marriage.

The most meaningful part of this project is reading through previous years. The joys and griefs quickly stir within us as if the events were happening in real time. Oh the things we’ve been through and been strengthened through!

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits; Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases; Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion; Who satisfies your years with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.” Psalms 103:2-5

God’s provision is so evident in the pages of our anniversary journal; He has…

  • forgiven us when we have wronged one another and given us the strength to forgive each other;
  • pulled us from the pit of despair in our grief and suffering and somehow poured unthinkable joy upon us;
  • healed our wounds that were brought upon us by others and those we created in our own sinfulness, which has allowed an undeserved full and abundant married life;
  • given Ron and I skills and talents that serve our family and others in fulfilling ways.

Most of all, when I take the time to recount these things on our anniversary, I am renewed… given energy, excitement and hope for the days ahead despite the circumstances of today. My relationship with my husband and with my Lord can be rocky at times, but, without a doubt, when I “keep the ring on” it just keeps getting sweeter with time.

What can you remember today that will help rejuvenate and satisfy you in your marriage? In your walk with the Lord?
