Devotional: Applying the Bible to my today.
Read: Isaiah 55: 6-13 (special focus on vs. 7)

This Sunday morning, through the window of my house, I saw the front gate of my church, which used to open widely every Sunday morning, but now is firmly closed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a pastor, I felt a deep burden of guilt. Then, I recalled a part of the prayer of Rev. Joe Wright which he offered in the opening ceremony of the Kansas House of Representatives in 1991.
“Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says: ‘Woe to those who call evil good,’ but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it Pluralism.”
Yes. We get so conceited and selfish. We've lost our spiritual balance and go through our desperate lives, shaking off our values. We human beings are to resemble “the image of God.” The image, “Ce´lem” in Hebrew, means a being made to learn the truth, to teach the truth and to live according to the truth. The truth, “Emeth” in Hebrew, means “God is the eternal King.”
We human beings have been conceited in front of God. We have disobeyed His order. So we have lost the image of God because of our sin (disobedience = haughtiness). Therefore, to return to the image of God is to repent of the sin of disobedience committed by our haughtiness and to receive the grace of forgiveness from God, the King. That is precisely believing God is the eternal King and worshiping Him who is God Almighty.
Reflect: Do we worship God in every moment in our lives (meditating on God's word and praying)?
The eternal King, my God, please forgive my sin of disobedience to you. Forgive my sin of haughtiness because I couldn't defeat the temptations in the world and the greed in my mind. I heartily repent of my sins to you, Lord. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

주일 오전, 나는 목사관 창문 너머로 주일이면 활짝 열려있어야 할 굳게 닫힌 교회 예배당 출입문을 물끄러미 바라보면서, 목회자로서 마음에 큰 짐(죄책감)을 느끼며 문득 ‘1996년 미국 캔사스에서 있었던 상원 회기 개회식에서 한 조 라이트(Joe Wright) 목사의 기도문’ 가운데 한 구절을 생각했다.
‘Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. ‘하늘의 하나님, 우리는 오늘 하나님의 용서를 원하고 인도하심을 구하기 위해 오늘 이곳에 왔습니다. 우리는 “악을 선하다고 말하는 자는 화가 있도다”라는 주님의 말씀을 기억합니다. 그런데 우리가 바로 이 말씀대로 합니다. 우리는 영적인 균형을 잃고 가치관이 뒤집어졌습니다. 우리는 당신의 말씀인 절대적 진리를 업신여겼습니다. 그러면서 다원주의라고 불렀습니다.’
그렇다. 우리는 교만하여 이기적인 인간이 되었고, 영적 균형을 잃고 가치관이 흔들리는 절망적인 삶을 살아가고 있다.
우리는 “하나님의 형상”을 닮은 존재이다. 여기 “형상”(히:‘첼렘’)이란, ‘진리(히:‘에메트’)를 배우고 진리를 가르치며 진리대로 살도록 만들어졌다‘는 뜻이다. “진리”(히:‘에메트’)란 ‘하나님은 영원하신 왕이시다.’란 의미이다.
영원한 왕이신 하나님 앞에서 우리 인간은 교만했다. 그의 명령에 불순종했다. 그러므로 그 죄(불순종=교만)로 인하여 하나님의 형상을 잃어버렸던 것이다. 이로 보건데, 하나님의 형상의 회복은 우리(나)의 교만으로 지은 불순종의 죄를 회개하고, 왕이신 하나님의 용서의 은총을 받는 것이다. 이것은 바로 ‘하나님이 우리의 영원한 왕이심을 믿고 그를 섬기며 사는 것’이다.
적용 : 하루의 삶 속에서 하나님을 예배하는 생활(말씀묵상과 기도생활)을 하고 있는가?
영원하신 왕, 나의 하나님, 세상의 유혹과 내 속의 욕심을 이기지 못하여 생긴 교만 때문에 지은 하나님께 대한 불순종의 죄를 용서하여 주옵소서. 주님 앞에서 진심으로 나의 죄를 회개합니다.
예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
