Devotional: Applying the Bible to my today.
Read: Deuteronomy 10:12-19

Loving and serving God with all our heart and souls as well as obeying Him is a vital part of our relationship with Him.
“And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?” (Deuteronomy 10:12-13)
In this text, He commands Israel to fear Him, walk in all His ways, love Him, and serve Him with all their heart and with all their soul noting that it is for their good that they serve Him.
“To the Lord your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it.” (Deuteronomy 10:14)
The heaven, the earth and all of creation, and all the universe and human beings; to whom do all of those belong? Who made all of those? Yes, God made them, and they belong to God, the Creator.
Amazingly, Our God was pleased with Israel so He made them His chosen people. Then, how should Israel, as the chosen people, serve God, the Creator? They should circumcise the foreskin of their heart and be no longer stiff-necked, meaning they were to allow their hearts to be softened and stop being stubborn.
“Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and do not be stiff-necked any longer.” (Deuteronomy 10:16)
Our God is preeminent and almighty, and He cares for the poor and loves the stranger as well.
“For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing.” (Deuteronomy 10:17-18)
God requires that Israel should remember when they were strangers in the land of Egypt and love the stranger.
"And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.” (Deuteronomy 10:19)
Yes. We too are like Israel; The God of love requires us to remember the time in which we were the strangers and to love our neighbors who are the strangers. Therefore, we serve all according to the order of God who is great, almighty and the ultimate love.
The way of the stranger is the way of suffering. To get close to those who go through suffering is to love them and to serve them. That is participating in the suffering of the Lord. We should remember God’s love and grace that He gave us when we were the strangers. We should practice “serving the strangers” with the love of Jesus and the mercy of God. I hope that we restore our identity as steadfast Christians as we serve the strangers.

- For whom and for what was the requirement of God? (Deuteronomy 10:13)
- How can you serve and love others in the midst of the current situation?
God of love, thank you for choosing us to love God and to love our neighbors with the humility and serving heart of Jesus. Please help us practice serving the strangers. Restore our identity as “steadfast Christians.” I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

성경을 보면 하나님께서 우리에게 요구하시는 것이 너무나도 많은 듯 하다. 그러나 요약해 보면 하나님은 우리가 그를 사랑하며 마음을 다하고 뜻을 다하여 그를 섬기기를 요구하신다는 것이다.
[신10:12-13] “이스라엘아 네 하나님 여호와께서 네게 요구하시는 것이 무엇이냐 곧 네 하나님 여호와를 경외하여 그의 모든 도를 행하고 그를 사랑하며 마음을 다하고 뜻을 다하여 네 하나님 여호와를 섬기고, 내가 오늘 네 행복을 위하여 네게 명하는 여호와의 명령과 규례를 지킬 것이 아니냐”
하나님의 요구는 택한 ‘이스라엘’이 하나님을 경외하고 그 모든 도를 행하고, 마음과 뜻을 다하여 하나님을 사랑하고 섬기는 것이다. 그리고 누구를 위해서 이렇게 하나님을 섬겨야 하는 것인가는 다름이 아닌 이스라엘 자신들의 행복을 위해서였다.
[신10:14]에 보면, “하늘과 모든 하늘의 하늘과 땅과 그 위의 만물은 본래 네 하나님 여호와께 속한 것이로되”했다.
이 하늘과 땅과 만물, 그리고 온 우주와 우리 인간까지, 이 모든 것이 누구의 소유라는 것인가? 누가 만드셨는가? 그렇다. 창조주 하나님이 만드셨고, 창조주 하나님의 소유이다.
놀라운 것은 우리 하나님은 모든 소유 가운데서 유독 ‘이스라엘’을 기뻐하시고 만민 중에서 선택하여 하나님을 섬기게 하셨다.
그러면 창조주 하나님의 택함을 받은 ‘이스라엘’은 구체적으로 어떻게 하나님을 섬겨야 하는가? 택함을 받은 ‘이스라엘’은 마음의 할례를 행하고, 다시는 목을 곧게 세워서는 안된다고 오늘 본문 [신10:16]에 말씀하고 있다. “그러므로 너희는 마음에 할례를 행하고 다시는 목을 곧게 하지 말라”
우리 하나님은 지극히 높으신 분이시고 능력이 많으신 분으로 불쌍한 자 편이 되시고 나그네를 사랑하신다고 [신10:17-18]에 말씀하고 있다. “너희의 하나님 여호와는 신 가운데 신이시며 주 가운데 주시오 크고 능하시며 두려우신 하나님이시라 사람을 외모로 보지 아니하시며 뇌물을 받지 아니하시고, 고아와 과부를 위하여 정의를 행하시며 나그네를 사랑하여 그에게 떡과 옷을 주시나니”
또한 오늘 본문 [신10:19]에 하나님은 ‘이스라엘’이 애굽에서 ‘나그네(Foreigners)’로 있을 때를 기억하고 “나그네를 사랑하라”고 말씀하신다. “너희는 나그네를 사랑하라 전에 너희도 애굽 땅에서 나그네 되었음이니라”
그렇다. 사랑의 하나님은 오늘날 우리 역시 한때 세상에서 나그네로 살았던 것을 기억하고 나그네로 있는 우리의 이웃을 사랑하라고 요구하신다. 그러므로 우리는 위대하시고 사랑과 능력이 많으신 하나님의 명령을 따라 이웃(나그네)을 섬겨야 한다.
나그네의 길은 고난의 길이다. 고난의 길을 걷는 이에게 다가가는 것은 그를 사랑하는 것이고 섬기는 것이다. 이것은 주님의 고난에 동참하는 일이다. 우리는 나그네였을 때를 기억하고, 나그네였을 때 입은 하나님의 사랑과 은혜를 기억하고, 하나님의 자비하심과 그리스도의 사랑으로 ‘나그네 돌봄’을 실천하는 우리 모두가 되어야 할 것이다.
‘나그네 돌봄’을 통하여 ‘우리는 변함없는 그리스도인입니다.’라는 나의 정체성을 다시금 회복하시기를 바란다.

- 수많은 민족들 가운데 ‘이스라엘 민족’을 택하신 하나님은 그들에게 무엇을 요구하셨는가? [신10:12]
- ‘하나님의 요구’는 결국 누구의 무엇을 위한 요구였는가? [신10:13]
- 택함을 받은 우리는 하나님의 요구대로 하나님을 예배하는 삶과 ‘나그네 돌봄’을 실천하자!
기도 :
사랑의 하나님, 예수님의 겸손과 섬김으로 하나님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑하도록 우리를 택하여 주심을 감사합니다. 예수님의 십자가 사랑으로 ‘나그네 돌봄’을 실천하여 ‘나는 변함없는 그리스도인입니다.’라는 나의 정체성을 드러나게 하옵소서. 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 기도드립니다. 아멘
